Mudras and Healing with Mudras
udra is a term with many meanings viz. gesture, mystic position of the hands, a seal, a symbol, body postures, eye positions, breathing techniques etc. Generally, where healing is concerned Mudra is effectively engaging and influencing our body and mind with soul by bending, crossing, extending or touching the fingers with other fingers. Each Mudra ultimately creates a special connection to cosmic consciousness. The origin of the Mudras is still a mystery. Mudras are not only found in Asia, but are also used throughout the entire world for rituals, prayers, dances, etc.

In India, mudras play an active role in various spheres of life. The various mudras and hastas (arm poses) are significant in depiction of Hindu Gods depicting various distinguishing characteristics of them. When you practice Madras, the pressure of the fingers should be very light and fine, and your hands should be relaxed. However, one will find that the fingers are very rigid. It is ideal not to use force, but start doing the madras for less time first and bringing the fingers together in whatever way is possible and then improve on it and also increase the time in mudras. Mudras can be done in any position, while lying down, or sitting or walking or standing or reading or watching anything or just listening to any talks, waiting in traffic lights/ jams etc. Though you could do it in any possible place and condition, it's efficacy gets accelerated if you can consciously get a meditative posture, focus on your hands, and observe the normal flow of breath and be tuned to the purpose of doing the mudra. Most masters recommend holding a mudra per day for 45 minutes; if you cannot do it in one stretch, you can also divide into two or three time periods. Generally, a mudra is most effective if you can do it with both hands, unless otherwise specified. If this is not possible (like you are busy doing something with one hand) then do the mudra with the hands that is free.

The effect of a mudra will depend on the individual; one must always allow the energy to take its own form of healing rather than trying to induce any way of healing, which, of course, one cannot induce at all. It is very interesting to note that the five fingers of our hands correspond to the five basic elements of body and also the five basic chakras:
